What Does It Cost to Remodel a Bathroom?

Every project is unique. These variables will influence what you will spend on your bathroom project.

  • Will we be doing some minor renovations or a full remodel replacing everything?
  • Is it a powder room ½ bath, a ¾ bath with a shower or a full bath with a tub and shower?
  • Is it a larger master bath with more cabinets, more sinks, and larger spaces requiring more materials?
  • Will we use stock cabinets with a laminate counter top or upgrade the cabinet, it’s hardware features and choose a solid surface stone or composite countertop?
  • The project may call for a practical tub with wall surround panels and a shower curtain. We may be upgrading to a tile or stone shower with a frameless glass shower door.
  • Your budget will primarily be shaped by the size, scope, complexity and quality of the finishes selected.

Minor Renovations: $15,000 to $3,000

  • This usually involves cosmetic changes without replacing everything in the bathroom.
  • Improve the core functioning systems with a new toilet, replacing a leaking faucet, installing a exhaust fan motor, upgrade the light fixture for better lighting. It can feel like a luxury when everything works the way it is supposed to work.
  • Refresh the space by replacing a medicine cabinet, vanity cabinet, countertop and faucet. New light fixtures and painting.
  • A tub or shower replacement without any other changes can be a minor renovation with a big impact.

Entry Level to Semi-Custom Remodel: $25,000 to $15,000

  • This involves replacing everything from the tub/shower, toilet, cabinets, countertop, faucet, flooring and light fixture but the layout remains the same.
  • Very practical finishes may be used for a rental property or an extra basement bathroom to provide great functioning quality but keep costs low.
  • An acrylic or fiberglass tub and wall panels with a modest shower faucet and a shower curtain can be installed.
  • We may be exploring a tile or composite stone shower with an upgraded faucet and shower head with a frameless glass shower door.
  • Some higher quality products can be selected to begin to create a more luxurious feel.

Semi-Custom to Custom Remodel: $35,000 to $22,000

  • This may involve slightly changing the layout, moving plumbing lines or small electrical or lighting changes.
  • This could include small structural changes expanding into an adjacent room or closet.
  • This would include some premium custom products and finishes.
  • Cabinet and hardware upgrades.
  • Countertop upgraded to a solid surface stone or composite material.
  • Plumbing fixture upgrades.
  • Additional trim or crown molding.

Custom Remodel: $50,000 to $35,000

  • A master bath or larger bath with more cabinets, sinks, faucets, tub, shower and more materials will have a larger budget.
  • Standard or custom finishes will naturally affect the cost range here as well. On some projects, an average sized bathroom with premium custom finishes can be in this cost range.
  • This may involve slightly changing the layout, moving plumbing lines or small electrical or lighting changes.
  • This could include small structural changes expanding into an adjacent room or closet.
